BIOS 251 WEEK I DISCUSSION; HOMEOSTASIS – WITH 100% CORRECT ANSWERS BIOS 251 Week 1 Discussion ● What does the term homeostasis mean? ● What types of mechanisms are used by the body to maintain homeostasis? ● Give an example of the mechanisms. ● What happens when homeostasis can not be restored? Answer: This week is the discussion on all things homeostasis. In the book Anatomy & Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function by author Kenneth Saladin, he explains homeostasis as being a term that means organisms maintain stability throughout all internal conditions. These types of internal conditions are things like stable temperatures, blood pressure, and body weight. The purpose of this correlates to negative feedback which is the process in which the body senses a change and activates a mechanism back to healthy. The mechanisms our body brings due to these are things like sweating due to hotter temperatures and shivering due to colder temperatures, known as thermoregulation. With this, if homeostasis can not be restored then the body will have to find a way or it mainly means disaster of that organism. In the article What if Homeostasis Fails? by David H. Nguyen, Ph.D. he states that if a disaster occurs in an organism then the reaction to it is much worse such as if your body temp falls too low or rises too high then you could experience hypothermia and/or heatstroke. These are both life- threatening occurrences that will leave you never the same. References: Nguyen, D. H. (2019, March 2). What if homeostasis fails? Sciencing. Saladin, K. (2019). Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function (9th ed.). McGraw-Hill.
