Description of Skill
Suctioning of a trach that involes a mulit-use catheter enclosed in a plastic sheath
Indications CONSIDERATIONS
- Most often used with patients who are
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
mechanically ventilated and have an
- Hand-washing
endotracheal or tracheostomy tube in place
- Ensure patient is in a comfortable position
- Hyperoxygenate the patient prior to suctioning
-Assure suction device is unloced. If indicated, open the
saline port and attach a vial of saline to the port
- Place suction mechanism in the lock position before
leaving the bedside

Client Education
- Maintain a clear, patent airway
- Teach patient why suction is perform
- Teach patient when to suction
- Teach patient when to ask for help
- Show patient and caregiver how to perform
the care
Potential Complications Nursing Interventions
- Hypoxia - Encouraging deep breathing exercises
- Infection - Maintain safety
- Trauma - Carful and diligent technique reduces risk
of pain
- Suction vaccum should be kept on low
