PREVIEW:
QUESTION 1: Energy Basics [18 Marks]
1.1 Define and explain the different forms of energy, providing real-world examples for each. (14)
ANSWER:

Energy exists in many forms, each with distinct characteristics and roles in our world.
• Kinetic Energy: Kinetic energy is the energy an object possesses due to its motion. The faster an
object moves, the greater its kinetic energy. For instance, when a car speeds along the highway, its
kinetic energy increases with its velocity. Similarly, a soccer ball flying through the air demonstrates
kinetic energy as it moves from one point to another. This type of energy is fundamental in anything
that moves, from vehicles to flowing water.
• Potential Energy: Potential energy is stored energy, often related to an object's position or
configuration. An object has more potential energy the higher it is or the more tension it contains.
A prime example is water held behind a dam, which stores gravitational potential energy due to its
elevated position. When released, this energy transforms into kinetic energy, as the water rushes
downward. Similarly, a stretched rubber band holds potential energy that is released when it snaps
back.
• Thermal Energy: Thermal energy, often associated with heat, comes from the movement of atoms
and molecules within a substance. The higher the temperature, the more thermal energy the
substance has. Everyday examples include a stove heating water, or even the warmth of the sun on
your skin. The faster the particles move, the hotter the object feels, and the more thermal energy
it contains.
• Chemical Energy: Chemical energy is stored within the bonds of molecules and is released during

• Electrical Energy: Electrical energy results from the movement of electrons through a conductor,
such as a wire. This form of energy is used to power nearly all modern technology, from household
