Precontemplation:
-Goal= - Answer-raise awareness, move toward contemplation
-Awareness that a problem exists
-Aware that there may be reasons to change
-Weighs benefits and risks/losses of changing vs. not changing behavior
-Ambivalence is a hallmark feature
-"Maybe I have a problem OR Maybe I don't."
-May stay in this stage for extended periods of time Often where we can start with
patient - Answer-Stage 2: Contemplation
Contemplation:
-Goal= - Answer-to consider that a problem exists
-"I know I have a problem and I need to change."
-Committed to making a change
-Plans to act within one month
-Planning to change in near future
-Experimenting with small changes (e.g. a reduction in use) - Answer-Stage 3:
Determination/Preparation
-"I am striving to do something different."
-Actively taking steps to change
-Not yet reached a stable state
-Motivation is evident
-Expect fluctuation: "one step forward, two steps back"
-Develop support systems for change
-Makes a plan & practices new behavior
-Implement change (3 to 6 months) - Answer-Stage 4: Action
-"My behavior is different."
-Has achieved initial goals
-After six months and beyond
-Working to maintain new behaviors over time
