1.trichology: The study of hair
2. 3 types of hair follicle: round, oval & elliptical
3. cuticle layer: outer layer of the hair, hard resistant layer
4. cortex: middle layer of the hair, soft elastic quality
5. medulla: center layer of the hair
6. keratinization: process where cells change their shape, dry out & form keratin

8. anagen: "growing stage" hair bulb has an attached root sheath. hair is darker
9. catagen: "transitional stage" ALL cell division stops. only lasts a few weeks.
10. telogen: "resting stage" hair bulb has no attached root sheath. Hair falls out.

12. eumelanin: black/brown color
13. pheomelanin: red in color, melanin that provides natural hair colors from red
and ginger to yellow/blond tones
14. albinism: absence of pigmentation in the eyes and skin and hair
15. texture: degree of coarseness or fineness in the hair fiber
16. density: judged by the # of active hair follicles per square inch
17. hair porosity: the ability of the hair to absorb moisture
18. hair elasticity: the ability of the hair to stretch and return to its original length
without braking

21. matting: "pilica polonica"; hair tangled together
22. nodules: "trichorrhexis nodosa" presence of lumps or swelling along the hair
