Ch. 3: Acids & Bases
Skill Notes
Mechanism of Proton Transfer Short arrow - breaks off Hydrogen from Acid
Long arrow - base→ [H+] of acid, base giving
electron/acid accepting electron
Using pka to compare acids Lower pka → stronger acid → weaker base
Equilibrium favors formation of weak acid
- Will shift to side with higher
1. Use pka values from book to predict
which is stronger acid (lower pka)
Bases (comparing basicity)
1. Draw conjugate acid of each base
2. Compare pka values
a. Smaller = stronger acid = weaker
base
b. Look for LARGER pka to
identify strong base
Using pka values to predict position of
Equilibrium
