Semester 2 2024
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
, MNM2615 Assignment 3 PORTFOLIO Semester 2 2024
a) Discuss the industries that Africa requires with a view to establishing a business
in Africa (5 marks for the theoretical discussion).
b) Provide example on which industry does the chosen SME fall in to and provide
two more industries that the chosen SME contributes in (10 marks for the practical
application). (15)
a) Theoretical Discussion: Industries Africa Requires
Africa requires industries that can address key challenges such as unemployment,
infrastructure deficits, and the need for value addition to natural resources. Some
critical industries include:
1. Agriculture and Agro-processing: Africa has vast arable land and a large
labor force, but agriculture remains largely underdeveloped. Industries
focusing on modernizing farming techniques, value addition (e.g., food
processing), and supply chain optimization could help address food security
and create jobs.
2. Renewable Energy: With a high dependency on fossil fuels and limited
access to electricity in rural areas, renewable energy (solar, wind, and
hydropower) industries have enormous potential to drive sustainable
development and industrialization.
3. Manufacturing: Industrialization is key for economic growth. Industries
focusing on light manufacturing (textiles, consumer goods) and heavy
manufacturing (steel, cement) can help boost local economies and reduce
reliance on imports.
