Introduction
The purpose of this chapter is to outline the research design and methodology used to explore
students' perspectives on school discipline. This research aims to address the identified
problem: the effectiveness of current disciplinary practices in schools as perceived by Grade R
students. To achieve this, a quantitative survey-based study was conducted, which allowed for
systematic data collection and analysis. This chapter provides details on the research paradigm,
approach, methodology, methods, sampling, data analysis, ethical considerations, and quality
assurance measures.
Research Design
This study adopts a quantitative descriptive research design. The quantitative design was
chosen because it allows for the collection of numerical data that can be analyzed statistically to
provide insights into students’ attitudes and perceptions. A descriptive design was employed to
systematically describe the students' perspectives on school discipline without manipulating
variables, making it an appropriate approach for gathering straightforward, observable data
from participants.
Research Paradigm
The research is situated within a positivist paradigm. The positivist paradigm assumes that
reality is objective and measurable through systematic observation and data collection. In this
study, the use of a standardized survey allows for the collection of quantifiable data that can be
analyzed to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of school disciplinary practices as
perceived by the students. This paradigm aligns with the goal of objectively understanding
students' perspectives through measurable outcomes.
Research Approach
A quantitative approach was selected for this research, which is appropriate for studies aiming
to gather and analyze numerical data. This approach enables the researcher to statistically
evaluate the responses collected from the survey, ensuring that findings can be generalized to
the broader student population. The use of closed-ended questions on a Likert scale is central to
this approach, as it allows for easy quantification of students’ perceptions.
