, TRANSITION INTO NURSING ROLE 2
Transition into Nursing Role
Graduation brings many mixed emotions as the student nurse transitions into a nurse. After
graduation this writer will seek employment in the state of Michigan. In order to become a
registered nurse in the state of Michigan first this writer would need to graduate from an
approved nursing program. Secondly, in order to register for the examination, the nurse would
need to submit their application 120 days before graduation. A criminal background check
including fingerprinting also must be completed in order to obtain the authorization to take the
board examination.
The writer is seeking employment in the state of Michigan and as part of the employment
process it is important to attend job fairs. As part of the nursing job search this writer attended a
nursing career fair at the University of Michigan. Another opportunity is use of nursing residency
program search engines. This can help when finding residency programs that follow desires that
new grads are seeking. In searching for residency programs the requirements that are needed
include that of completion of state board exam within eight weeks of hire, participate in sessions
with mentor meetings and complete nurse residency program within twelve weeks (University of
Michigan, 2018). Areas that are offered for the nurse residency program include that of the ER,
ICU, NICU and OR residency programs.
Another area that is helpful in obtaining a new graduate job would be to use a job search engine
on a specific hospital website. The websites included filters for new graduate positions in order
to find open positions on units, shifts and locations that are to the new graduate likings. In order
to apply the new graduate must have a bachelor’s or higher in nursing for Beaumont Hospital
Royal Oak employment. This would include holding a license in the state of Michigan, BLS
Certification, copy of resume and cover letter (Royal Oak Beaumont, 2017).
