Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
The material of this course book is clearly structured by following WBP stages. The language, topic,
vocabulary, activities and tasks are all appropriate and logical to advance level students. The
activities get progressively more complex and challenging at an appropriate speed.
After analysing the whole unit (Global Living) and scope and sequence, it can be easily seen that
task based approach is used in this course book thus students interact with other students in pairs
and groups in order to complete the tasks. In this way, they can enhance both their receptive and
productive skills and build confidence. The listening and reading texts are interesting and
authentic sounding/looking and culturally appropriate for any culture, belief or ethnic group
therefore students will have a lot to say and stay motivated throughout all activities in the unit.
Based on the numerous exercises with clear explanation and some of them with examples,
students can also work independently and there are plenty of opportunities for recycling and
revision. On the other hand, lots of discussions and different variety of other activities such as
writing a report, interview, argument might be intimidating time to time but it helps on building
confidence and gives students a sense of achievement at the end of the lesson.
In terms of four skills and language areas, there is a good balance between them and are all
covered. The only criticism if I could bring is, there is no sufficient pronunciation activities
provided. Few activities can be added by the teacher to cover this area.
The course book is a little bit pricey in comparison to others however I believe it is worth it. It
comes with a DVD and MyEnglishLab pack. DVD contains all the audio, video clips and a
downloadable vocabulary book and MyEnglishLab is an online platform with vocabulary and
grammar activities. It grades students' answers and gives them a meaningful feedback. On the
other hand, there is no grammar referring pages apart from the grammar extension bank pages
(one mentioned on page 9) and no tests in Students' book however there are tests in Teacher's
Resource book which comes with a disc pack. Also, lesson plan procedures are not mentioned
in Teacher's book according to my research.
The material is well designed with attractive, eye-catching and colourful visual aids to complement
the readings which helps to engage students to do the activities. The layout is clean and tidy
despite the amount of content in a page.
In conclusion, if I take this unit as a reference for the entire book, I would definitely utilize this
resource in my advanced class as it covers the vast majority of the checklist for evaluating a course
book.
