, 1. Introduction: Problem Statement
I am a data analyst for the basketball team Miami Heat. I have located a large set of
historical data that I am working to analyze and find patterns in the data set. To find the
statistical significance of the claims made about the team, I will perform several hypothesis tests.
I will be analyzing sample data results from the tests to determine points scored by my team and
relative skill level. I will be comparing sample data results with the assigned teams results to
conclude and interpret where the team’s skill level was in the time frames earlier stated and to
help the teams manager and coach make critical decisions for the team to improve the teams
performance in the future.
A hypothesis tests a hypothesis by comparing it to a null hypothesis. If the probability
falls below a predetermined significance level, then the null hypothesis will be rejected and the
hypothesis that is being tested has a level of significance. I will use three approaches that involve
critical values, confidence intervals, and p-value to perform the hypothesis testing. I will be
using the tests to find the mean, the difference between two means, and for a proportion.
This will assist me to validate critical claims, my analysis will provide the teams coach
and management with evidence. To help the team’s management to make key decisions that will
improve the team in upcoming seasons, I will interpret statistically valid findings and describe
their practical implications.
