Activity Data Code: MCQ
Table I – Lens 1, Focal Distance = 10 cm
Complete the table below using your data and information found under the Background tab
(see "Summary of Formulas and Concepts Needed for Calculations").
Note: screen distance and image distance are the same for a sharp in-focus image.
Object Distance Image Distance Image
Trial Magnification
(cm) (cm) Smaller or Larger
1 20 20 larger 1
2 30 15 smaller 0.5
3 40 13.3 smaller 0.3
Observations and Questions
[1] Describe the difference in image size and magnification seen in each trial above.
If the image size is equal to object size the magnification is equal to one. The
magnification is less than 1 when image distance is less than object distance.
Sample Calculation: For Trial 2 show that f, do, and di satisfy the lens/mirror equation.
1/f=1/d0+1/di
1/10=1/30+1/d0
1/do=1/10-1/30
