1 QUESTION ONE - CONTEXTUAL QUESTIONNAIRE – (5 MARKS)

Answer the following open-ended questions to the best of your ability and give as much
information as possible.

1. Describe the school where you did your practical teaching (location, age, facilities, how
many learners are enrolled at the school, how many teachers teach at the school, the
language of learning and teaching, etc.).

• The school is in the village and has been opened since from 2002.
• There about 186 learners in the school
• The school have 6 professional teachers who teaches and educator assistants.
• The language of learning and teaching is English
2. Describe the classroom in which you did your practical teaching (size, facilities, learning
and teaching support materials, classroom atmosphere, etc.).

• The classrooms are clean and there is enough space. In the side and back of the
classroom the is cardboard filled with books.
• The class-room atmosphere is conducive to learning. There are poster and charts
on the class-room wall.

3. Describe the learners you taught during your practical teaching (number per class,
degree of readiness to learn, their home environmental conditions, etc.).
• Grade 4 are 18 in their Classroom, grade 5 are 21 and Grade 6 are 23. The school
is in rural area where most of the learners are from poor background. Learners
were not as good as I thought as I thought but there are some learners who
showed positive attitude in their studies.

4. Describe your mentor/subject/learning area teacher (knowledge, teaching experience,
helpfulness, guidance, etc.)

• My mentor has knowledge, and she is an experienced professional teacher, who
also has the knowledge and more experience in the subject area. She
understands the subject very well and have skills in teaching difficult concept in
a simple way. My mentor uses different teaching strategies and approaches to
accommodate every learner when teaches based on the individual needs of
learner.

• One of the most valuable qualities of my mentor/teacher is their helpfulness. she
goes above and beyond to assist me as student teacher. she provides timely
feedback on assignments and assessments, giving constructive criticism and
suggestions for improvement. She also offers additional resources and
references to supplement the learning process and deepen my understanding of
the subject. My mentor gives me guidance on career pathways and offer insights
into the practical applications of the knowledge gained in the subject/learning
area. She is approachable and supportive, fostering a positive mentor-student
relationship that promotes growth and learning.

QUESTION 2 - OBSERVING EXPERIENCED TEACHERS (10 Marks)

As part of your experiences during teaching practice, you will be observing lessons taught by
your mentor-teacher. This observation requires you to be actively involved in the process. You
need to observe five lessons during your teaching practice period. You may observe more
than one teacher in your chosen subject if the school allows it.
Lesson observation 1

Date: 24 July 2023 Subject: Mathematics

Grade: 4 Number of learners in class: 18
Lesson topic: Describing and Ordering Fractions

1. Without asking your mentor-teacher, write down the aim of the lesson.

At the end of the lesson learners must be able to compare and order common fractions
with different denominators (halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, sevenths and
eighths.

2. Describe what the teacher did to introduce the lesson?

The teacher started by explaining to the learner what fraction is, the denominator and
the numerator in a fraction.

The type of fractions and the examples of those types of fractions.

3. What were the specific activities the learners were involved in during the lesson?

Learners write a class-activity
They interact with the teacher by answering question that the teacher post to them.

4. Identify which activities the learners enjoyed the most? Why do you say so?

Learners enjoyed writing classwork. I believe they understood the concept very well.

5. Write down the questions the teacher asked the class during the lesson.

Learners are asked to give examples of proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed
numbers

6. What resources (LTSM) did the teacher use during the lesson?
