, INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS 2
Introduction
“Communication isn’t about us feeding others information or about others pouring
their points into our heads. It’s about relationships, understanding, and expectations. It is like
a chemical reaction in which two elements form an indivisible, interdependent compound.”
[CITATION Kri04 \p 53 \l 1033 ]
Every day, in many ways, we communicate. We communicate our thoughts, feelings,
desires and more. Simple or complex, inadvertent or intentional, ad hoc or planned, active or
passive, communication is one of our key tools for achieving results, satisfying our needs and
fulfilling our ambitions. The way in which we communicate reflects our innermost selves,
our skills, and our confidence. It indicates how much appreciation and respect we expect
from others. Our ability to communicate has a direct bearing on our friendships, promotions,
salary increases, responsibilities and career paths. It directly affects the level of support and
help we receive from others, dictating our ability to have our own ideas accepted and
implemented. How well we gather and give information, ideas and feelings will determine
how well we solve problems, make decisions, reach agreements and solve disagreements
[CITATION Kri04 \l 1033 ]. Interpersonal communication is communication between two or
more interdependent individuals and is inherently relational in nature, existing on a
continuum from relatively impersonal to intimate where verbal and non-verbal messages are
involved [ CITATION DeV16 \l 1033 ]. This verbal and non-verbal communication is shared
between the source and the receiver in the form of; messages and meta-messages, through the
noise, vocal-auditory, and cutaneous-tactile communication channels [ CITATION DeV16 \l
1033 ]. This following essay will reflect and assess the effectivity of my verbal and non-
verbal communication skills evident in a 6-minute video clip in which I engage in an
interdependent conversation.
