Introduction
Interpersonal communication is communication between two or more interdependent
individuals and is inherently relational in nature, existing on a continuum from relatively
impersonal to intimate where verbal and non-verbal messages are involved. This verbal and
, INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 2
non-verbal communication is shared between the source and receiver in the form of;
messages and meta-messages, through noise, vocal-auditory, and cutaneous-tactile
communication channels. This transactional process is constantly changing and influenced by
the need to learn, relate, influence, play, and the need to help. Interpersonal interactions
stimulate similar or contrasting behaviour patterns based on the content shared between
participants. These elements are the foundation that characterise interpersonal communication
and, if used effectively, will have intellectual and practical benefits. These include deeper
understanding of the self and others, as well as personal, social, relationship, and professional
benefits, respectively . As we communicate we use two major signal systems, verbal and non-
verbal. [ CITATION DeV16 \l 1033 ]This essay will address and assess the verbal, non-
verbal, and communication barriers present from a 2-minute clip
Verbal Communication
Verbal messages are interactive signals which aim to produce a unified message.
Verbal communication consists of messages sent with words and are both oral and written
words. Verbal messages are influenced by the principles that messages are packaged,
meanings are in people and are either denotative or connotative, vary in politeness,
obstruction, anonymity, deception, assertiveness, and cultural sensitivity which are confirmed
or disconfirmed in verbal communicative interaction[ CITATION Pea85 \l 1033 ].
Discriminate among and avoiding indiscrimination
Indiscrimination is evident in the form of stereotyping when individuals, objects, or
events are not recognised as unique. Indiscrimination is seen when Sheldon says, “blonde
women, huh?”, associating Penny as a “typical dumb blonde” as opposed to an individual he
personally knows. Leonard affectively uses an extensional device, the index. In so doing,
Leonard identifies Penny as an individual rather than a stereotypical label.
