PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
Binds to benzodiazepine receptors on the post Anxiety, management of anxiety disorders or
synaptic GABA neuron. Results in neuronal short term <4 months relief of anxiety
excitability and membrane permeability to chloride
ions.
Complications Medication Administration
CNS depression, sedation, lightheadedness, ataxia, IV
amnesia, toxicity, pain at injection site, hypotension, ORAL
confusion, delirum, hallucinations, stupor Initial 0.5-1 mg twice daily up to
10mg/day
Contraindications/Precautions
Hypersensitivity to lorazepam or any component of
formulation or other benzodiazepines. Glaucoma, severe Nursing Interventions
respiratory insufficiency. Myasthenia gravis
Give medication with meals and
snacks to counter-act
gastrointestinal upset that could
occur. Monitor VS and patients
Interactions airway/breathing/rr especially for
signs of depression
High fat means can reduce absorption, grapefruit juice can
reduce metabolism, CNS depressants like alcohol or
opioids can result in respiratory depression and
anticonvulsants can cause CNS depression
Client Education
Inform and educate client on the
dependency effects that the drug may
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness cause during treatment or after. Teach
on the withdrawal symptoms and what
