QUESTION 1
1.1 A teacher counsellor must possess positive personal characteristics to
be an effective counsellor. Name and discuss three (3), characteristics you
may possess that would enable you to be an effective teacher counsellor.
1. Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. For a
teacher-counsellor, empathy allows them to enter and experience the child's world as
it is experienced by the child. This characteristic enables the counsellor to connect
with learners on a deeper emotional level, creating a safe and trusting environment
where learners feel heard and understood. Being empathetic, a teacher can help
learners explore their feelings, experiences, and challenges without fear of judgment
or rejection.
2. Patience
Patience is an essential quality for a teacher-counsellor, as it involves the ability to
remain calm and composed, even when dealing with challenging situations or when
progress seems slow. Patience allows the counsellor to give learners the time and
space they need to express themselves fully and work through their issues at their
own pace. It also helps the counsellor avoid becoming frustrated or overwhelmed,
enabling them to maintain a supportive and encouraging attitude throughout the
counselling process.
