, In the presence of chronic stress, the weak part of the body is the most vulnerable.
This is why people tend to respond to stress with a particular type of bodily
reaction. For example, one person may respond by always getting headaches,
whereas another person may frequently get stomach upsets. This is called
response specificity, referring to the tendency to respond to stressors with a
specific type of physiological reaction. In this section, we look at an example of one
type of behaviour pattern that has been well documented, the so-called cardiac
personality, referring to people at high risk for heart disease.

The GAS model describes the process of stress in general terms only. It does not include finer
details. For example, it does not take into account the fact that events and circumstances are
not equally stressful to all people. Someone may find bungee jumping a pleasurable challenge
while others may be horrified at the idea of jumping off a high bridge attached to a rubber
tether.

We can now put physical and emotional tension together to form the concept of psycho-physiological arousal. Psycho-physiological arousal
(usually just called arousal) consists of physical arousal (the difference between our basic and our actual tension level in a particular situation)
and psychological arousal (the difference between our feeling of no emotional tension and the feeling of emotional tension that we experience in
a particular situation)

known as the Yerkes-Dodson law. This law states that performance increases as arousal
increases, but this is only true when stress increases to a moderate level of arousal,
where performance reaches an optimal level. When arousal is increased beyond this
level, performance does not increase further – it starts to decrease.

All living bodies maintain some degree of physical tension. The
pg339 sympathic and parasympathic divisions of the autonomic nervou
system are responsible for physical tension in the body. Sympa
stimulation increases the body’s degree of physical tension,
whereas parasympathic stimulation decreases it. The relationsh
between sympathic and parasympathic stimulation determines t
level of physical tension in the body.
