Case 4 course 6 learning year 2 GW (BMEZ)
Name: Esmée Cox
Student number: i6160834
Date: 20 June 2019
Learning goals:
1. What are the different steps mentioned in the implementation model from Grol and
Wensing?
o Different elements, and how are these related?
2. How can an implementation process be planned (in a healthcare setting)?
3. What are the steps/elements of conceptual model of spread and sustainability of
innovations? How are they related?
4. What’s the most relevant model to use in case 4, look at pro’s and con’s?
Grol, R., Wensing, M., Eccles, M., & Davis, D. (2013). Improving patient care:The
implementation of change in health care. Chapter 3: Effective implementation of change in
healthcare: a systematic approach. Oxford: Wiley Blackwell.
Elements of effective implementation of change
Pagina 1 van 19
, The ‘implementation of change model’
- A process of implementation of change is initiated because
o New scientific information may become available that indicates that patient
care can be provided more effectively, safely, or efficiently (top-down)
o Of dissatisfaction with current routines within a work setting (bottom-up)
- Steps
o Developing a proposal and targets for change
Example: new routines for practice, guideline recommendations for
effective or efficient care, the introduction of new valuable techniques
or procedures into existing clinical work, insights concerning
organization of patient care processes
Characteristics of an innovation and the plan for change
The way in which the development has taken place
The quality and credibility of the proposed new way of working
The credibility of the developers
The degree of support for the innovation
The accessibility and attractiveness of the proposed
improvement
The scope for adapting the proposed improvement to suit local
situations and needs
Features of a successful innovation
Conveys more advantages than disadvantages for the user
