Program Design - ANSWER Designing a resistance training program is a complex process that requires the
recognition and manipulation of variables.
Needs analysis - ANSWER A two stage process that includes an evaluation of the requirements and
characteristics of the sport and an assessment of the athlete.
Movement analysis - ANSWER Body and limb movement patterns and muscular involvement.
Physiological analysis - ANSWER Strength, Power, hypertrophy, and muscular endurance priorities.
Injury analysis - ANSWER Common sites for joint and muscle injury and causative factors.
Profile - ANSWER Athletes needs and goals by evaluating training (and injury) status, conducting a variety
of tests, evaluating the results, and determining the primary goal of training.
Training status - ANSWER An athletes current condition or level or preparedness to begin a new or
revised program.
Injury status from medical professional ideal.
Training background or exercise history - ANSWER Training that occurred before he or she began a new
or revised program.
Type of program
Length of involvement in training programs
Level of intensity in training programs
Degree of exercise technique experience
, Exercise technique experience - ANSWER The knowledge and skill to perform resistance training
properties effectively.
Exercise selection - ANSWER Involves choosing exercises for a resistance training program.
Must understand the nature of various exercises, the movement and muscular requirements of the
sport, the athletes exercise technique, the equipment available, and the amount of training time
available.
Core exercises - ANSWER Recruit one or more large muscle areas, involve two or more primary joints
(multi-joint exercises) and receive priority when one is selecting exercises because of their carryover to
sport.
Assistance exercises - ANSWER Recruit smaller muscle areas, involve only one primary joint (single joint
exercises), and are considered less important to improving sport performance.
Good for injury prevention, rehabbing weak muscles from injury, or prehab for those prone to injury in
sport.
Structured exercise - ANSWER Core exercise that emphasizes loading the spine directly or indirectly
(power clean).
Involves muscular stabilization of posture during performance of the lifting movement.
Power exercise - ANSWER Core exercise that is performed very quickly or explosively.
Specificity, or SAID (Specific adaptation to imposed demands) - ANSWER The more similar the training
activity is to the actual sport movement, the greater the likelihood that there will be positive transfer to
that sport.
Pick exercises that will be similar to the demands of the sporting movements (i.e. Back squat and
basketball- Jumping)
Agonist - ANSWER The muscle or muscle group actively causing the movement.
