Assignment 2 2024
Question 1
1.1 Introduction and Background of the Proposed Research Study
In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, cybersecurity has become a critical
concern for organizations and individuals alike. With the increasing reliance on digital
platforms, the risks associated with cyber-attacks have grown exponentially. These
threats range from data breaches and identity theft to more sophisticated attacks like
ransomware and phishing schemes. As more sensitive information is stored and
processed online, the need for robust cybersecurity measures has never been more
urgent. This proposed research study aims to explore the effectiveness of current
cybersecurity strategies implemented by small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
While large corporations often have the resources to invest in advanced security
measures, SMEs typically operate with limited budgets and may lack the expertise to
safeguard their systems effectively. This research will focus on identifying the most
common cybersecurity challenges faced by SMEs and evaluating the strategies they
employ to protect their digital assets. The study's background highlights the growing
importance of cybersecurity, especially for smaller organizations that may be more
vulnerable to cyber threats due to resource constraints.
1.2 Research Problem
Based on the introduction and background, the research problem can be defined as
follows: Despite the growing awareness of cybersecurity risks, many small to medium-
sized enterprises (SMEs) continue to face significant challenges in implementing
effective cybersecurity measures. This is often due to limited financial resources, lack of
technical expertise, and the rapidly changing nature of cyber threats. The problem this
research aims to address is the gap between the cybersecurity needs of SMEs and the
strategies currently employed to meet those needs, leading to vulnerabilities that could
result in substantial financial and reputational damage.
