QUESTION 1

Discuss the relationship between corporate culture and safety culture. (20)
Van Loggereberg (2016:7) stated that the relationship between corporate culture and safety
culture is:

❖ Beliefs, values, artefacts and attitudes reflect the uniqueness of organization.
❖ Organizations use a general set of safety culture characteristics.

❖ According to Taylor (cited by van Loggereberg, 2016:7) stated that the core set of safety
principles are:
safety is a recognized value
safety is an integrated part of all organizational activities
safety is learning-driven
there is clear leadership and accountability for safety measures.

❖ Antonsen (cited by van Loggereberg, 2016:7) further suggested that organizations are
complex and may consist of:
multiple cultures,
depending on size and complexity,
and the hierarchical levels and occupations found in organizations.

❖ Corporate culture serves as an overall umbrella concept.
❖ The concept ‘safety’ must be understood as the presence of hazards / risk and consists of
three elements:
the state or situation where the risk is deemed to be acceptable or as low as reasonably
practical
safety is a sentiment of security and control
safety is a practice
that refers to the ability to
reduce or eliminate the likelihood of hazards.

❖ A general assumption that safety culture is a sub-branch of organizational culture.
❖ Organizational culture contributes to the success of an organization.

❖ A safety culture is fundamental to the management of safety-related aspects of the
organization.

QUESTION 2

Persuasion strategies can be used to influence key employees to establish and maintain a
successful corporate safety culture. Outline and explain these persuasion strategies. (10)
According to Goetsch (cited by Esterhuyzen 2016:22) outlined that the Persuasion strategies are:

❖ Build trust:
People will be more likely to listen to and be persuaded by safety professionals if they
trust them. Ways to build trust include: always tell the truth, even if it is not what people
want to hear; keep promises (rather do more than what was promised than overpromising
and not being able to deliver); and admit when mistakes are made (learn from it and
move on).

❖ Avoid information overload:
Make sure that the message is delivered in the shortest, most concise manner possible.
Do not give people too much information.

❖ Avoid condescending tones and technical language:
Safety professionals are likely know more about safety issues than the other
employees. They should not make other people feel inferior or use safety terms that other
people do not understand.

❖ Listen carefully to employees’ concerns:
Safety professionals must pay proper attention to the concerns raised by other people.
Two-way communication is needed in order to persuade employees of the value of safety.
By listening to the concerns of others, you can learn: areas of opposition (how people
differ from you); the points of agreements (what people are in agreement with); and how
to reshape, revise or redirect your message.
❖ Watch for nonverbal cues:
Gestures, facial expressions, tone, pitch and volume, can indicate people’s true
feelings. Pay attention to such nonverbal cues to identify problems.
