Plant Tissues
Plants, like animals, are made up of several sorts of tissues. Any plant is made up of a
variety of tissues, each of which is categorized according to structure, origin, and function.
Based on origin, plant tissues maybe classified into meristematic or embryonic tissues and
non-meristematic or permanent tissues.
Meristematic Tissue
These are tissues mostly located at the tips of roots and shoots of the plants where cells
actively divides. They are responsible for the production of more cells needed for the plants
growth and development.
Types of Meristematic Tissue
1. Apical Meristem
These are found at the tips of the shoots and roots which increases in length as the
Apical meristem produce new cells.
, 2. Intercalary Meristem
These are found at the vicinity of nodes which occurs at the intervals along stems.
Just like apical meristem, they also increase the length of the stems.
3. Lateral Meristem
It increases the girth or diameter of plants. They are found along the sides of some
roots and stems.
