Millennial Generation

Describe a Millennial learner in one sentence

Millennial learner: It is the first ubiquitous cohort of learners raised on and confirmed as experts in the latest, fastest,
coolest, greatest and newest electronic technologies on the planet.

Define the term Millennial generation

Millennial generation defines the generation of children born approximately between 1981 and 2000.

Discuss 5 core traits of millennial generation learners

 They have been made to feel they are special = They have always been treated as special and important. This
generation of children has been the most wanted. Every milestone in their lives has been marked with celebrations
and praise. They may claim they want privacy, but they crave attention.
 They have been sheltered by their parents and society = Highly protected as children. They grew up in a time of
increasing safety measures and they were rarely left unsupervised.
 They are team orientated rather than individualists = They sacrifice their own identity to be part of a team. They do
not want to stand out among their peers, they want to be seen as part of the group.
 They have been pressured to study hard and excel = Tightly scheduled as children and used to having every hour of
the day filled with structured activity. They feel pressured to succeed.
 They are high achievers and highly educated = They focus on working hard, getting good grades, involvement in
extra-curricular activities.

Mention and discuss two methods of engaging learners who are Millennial Generations

Connect with content – they value content that they can access anywhere, anytime. Online resources appeal in ways
that traditional printed textbooks do not.

Connect learners with each other – they value social connections and use technology to facilitate them.

Give one characteristic of the Millennial generation

One of the characteristics of the millennial generation is that they are technologically literate and can relate to and
appreciate the flexibility of an online teaching environment.

Mention and describe 5 characteristics of the Millennial generation

 Technology Savvy = They communicate more through technology than in person.
 Prefer teamwork and collaboration = They work in teams and possess high energy. They share what they have
learnt through collaboration in small groups.
 Emotionally open = They prefer an environment where they can express feelings openly. They are open to meeting
new people and sharing personal information on social media.
 Multitask on everything = They multitask proficiently while working hard and simultaneously interacting with others.
 Learn by inductive discovery = They prefer to learn by performing tasks. Millennials are kinaesthetic, experimental
and hands-on learners.
