Philosophy
- All life in biology
- All biology is chemistry
- All chemistry is physics
- All physics is maths
- All maths is abstract thought
- Which is only possible due to biology
• Everything that happens in life is due to chemical reactions between elements.
Everything in the Universe is made up of 94 elements but there are about 115
elements in the Periodic Table.

P = Phosphorus

• Atomic Structure
• The concept of matter being invisible particles is old.
• The concept of atoms comes from Ancient Greece word "atomos" meaning uncuttable.
• small number = atomic number (proton number). Large number = mass number
(protons and neutrons)

Carbon's mass number is 12.011 because of isotopes.
Atomic Structure Continued
• Electrons "orbit" the nucleus in orbitals.
• Their position in the orbital can be predicted but not measured as stated by the
Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.
• Each orbital has a set number of electrons and a set energy level.
• The higher the energy level is, the further away from the nucleus the electron is

Avogadro's number and moles
6.022 x 10^23.
Moles = mass/Mr

• An element is a substance made up of only one type of atom.
• Mr = all mass numbers added together for all the elements in a compound.
• Mixture is combinations of substances that are not bound together, therefore, mixtures
can be separated.
• Molecules are when 2 or more atoms combine.
• A compound is produced when two or more atoms are chemically combined.
