The Chimpanzee
Pan troglodytes - ANS-What is the correct Lennaeous name of the common Chimpanzee?

They live in Equatorial Africa, mostly on the West, but fanning into the East and Central Africa -
ANS-Where do Chimpanzees live?

It is really hard to integrate into a chimpanzee population. There are some populations which
have still not been fully habituated. This makes it very difficult for us to get close to them and
collect their feces to understand their diet.
But Jane Goodall did this, and learn that Chimps use tools too. - ANS-Why do we need to thank
Jane Goodall?

Knuckle-walking. Though there might be evidence that shows that knuckle-walking developed
independently in both species, as opposed to them coming from a common ancestor. -
ANS-How are chimpanzees similar to gorillas?

Locomotion, body dimorphism, diet - ANS-What are three ways in which chimps and gorillas are
different?

Chimps will spend more time in tress than apes. They will brachiate, swing from trees, and walk
bipedally. - ANS-Chimp and Gorilla differences: Locomotion

Chimps exhibit much less boy dimorphism than apes. - ANS-Chimp and Gorilla differences:
Body Dimorphism

They are very ecologically distinct from gorillas. Chimps eat 50% fruits and are highly
frugivorous. The most commonly consumed food is figs. Some gorilla populations do eat fruit,
but they eat mostly folivorous fiberous food. Chimps also tend to supplement their diet with
more animal products than do gorillas. - ANS-Chimp and Gorilla differences: diet

They will do so to reach fruit in trees or to reach for things on the group. But a clear example is
for food competition - if you put a bunch of food in a place where there isn't enough for
everyone, you will see bipedalism within the chimps. This is because they can run and grab the
food with two hands and run away, able to hold a lot more fruit. We, as anthropologists, are
interested in this because we wonder if this speaks to the development of bipedalism in
humans. However, most people think humans are bipedal for energetic purposes (takes less
energy on two feet than on four).
In short, bipedalism is a short, but significant, locomotive pattern in chimps. - ANS-Why might
chimps walk bipedally? How does this speak to human bipedalism?
