1.1 Diversity awareness training seeks to motivate employees to recognise the worth and dignity
of everyone in the workplace, and to treat them with respect.
1.1.1 What are the potential advantages of amore diverse workforce in the South African context
• Tapping into a range of skills which the organisation never had before
• Attracting, retaining and utilising the best talent
• Enhancing communication and understanding between groups and individuals
• Promoting greater productivity as a result of employee job satisfaction
• Developing enhanced creativity, innovation, adaptability and problem-solving and the
accompanying timeous responses to diverse customers and markets
• Utilising all people to the maximum and creating improved relations and communication
between organised labour and management
• Extending the breadth of understanding in leadership positions
• Enhancing global competitiveness
1.1.2 In light of the above statement, identify and briefly discuss five exercises that organisations
may use in diversity training.
1. Values clarification – a checklist of values is prioritised by all individuals in terms of their
own preference, the group then discuss the differences and similarities in the priorities
2. Perceptual differences – participants are asked to give a precise percentage definition of
terms, this uncovers the imprecise communication that may exist in the workplace
3. Problem-solving case studies – participants are given a partial description of a job applicant
and are told to come up with a complete profile
