, Section A: What I expect to see in this section.
Choose your research topic and develop an overarching
research question based on the topic.
Research Topic: Factors affecting UWC’s students’ academic performance.
Research question: Is there a relationship between academic performance and class attendance among
third-year students?
Identify and define the main relevant concepts
(conceptualisation). Explain how these concepts will be
measured (operationalised).
Operationalization of Concepts.
Academic Performance: Academic performance is one measure of students' success in University. In
this study, academic performance is operationalized through two main variables: quality and grade.
Quality: Quality of academic performance refers to the level of achievement obtained in a coursework. It
will be measured using grading symbols A (90% - 100%), B (80% - 89%), C (70% - 79%), D (60% -
69%), E (50% - 59%), and F (below 50%). These grades are assigned to the course and are made
available in the student’s transcript. A symbolises the highest level of achievement, while a F indicates a
failure.
Grade: The grade variable is the quantitative aspect of their academic performance. This will be
measured by using percentage scores, which provide a more precise assessment of students' achievement
levels.
Class Attendance:
Class attendance is important for learning and is tied to academic performance. In this study, class
attendance is operationalized through the variable of frequency of class attendance.
Frequency of Class Attendance: Frequency of class attendance refers to the number of times students
attend scheduled classes or lectures within a specific timeframe. In this case, our assessment is the
academic year. The variable is quantified by recording the total number of class sessions attended by each
student.
- Identify the target population.
