TMS3713 ALTERNATIVE PORTFOLIO 2020
Task 1
Give an overview of your Geography teaching practice experience.
A. Describe the school where you would like to do your teaching practice. Where Is it
located? What grades would you prefer to teach, and what are your reasons for
these choices?
School Location and Description:
I would like to conduct my teaching practice at Springfield High School, located in the
suburb of Springfield in Johannesburg, South Africa. Springfield High is a well-established
public school known for its commitment to academic excellence and its diverse student
body. The school is situated in a vibrant community, easily accessible by public
transportation, and equipped with modern facilities, including well-resourced classrooms,
computer labs, and a library.
Preferred Grades and Reasons:
I would prefer to teach Grade 9 Social Sciences (Geography). Here are my reasons
for choosing this specific grade:
Curriculum Focus:
Grade 9 Geography covers fundamental topics such as map skills, weather and climate,
and population dynamics. These topics are crucial as they lay the groundwork for more
advanced geographical studies in higher grades. My interest in cartography and climatology
aligns well with the Grade 9 curriculum.
Student Development:
At this stage, students are transitioning from the General Education and Training (GET)
phase to the Further Education and Training (FET) phase. It is a critical period for
developing analytical and critical thinking skills. I believe I can significantly impact their
understanding and appreciation of geography, helping them build a strong foundation for
their future studies.
Engagement and Interaction:
