The work sample I submitted was part of a series of short 1-minute “bumpers” to
promote the local town and TV station I interned for. This one highlighted the farmer’s
market in a visually aesthetic and eye-catching way. I was assigned to brainstorm,
design, film, create the sound design, and edit each bumper in the series. It was a
challenge to step out of my comfort zone for several of these videos as I had to talk to
the public, explain who I was and what I was doing, and ensure the public was okay
with the TV station sharing their faces. I primarily focus on film editing, so it was a new
experience to edit for live television. Building stories in as short of time as a minute was
great practice. It was interesting to try to edit to promote and lead the audience of
several demographics to one goal: visit and explore their town through the TV station. I
came out with an understanding that even for a short video as quick as a minute, it still
requires a lot of planning and brainstorming, ads, commercials, and bumpers alike. I
now know the importance of planning and mapping out specific components for videos
on live television.
