Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) - ANSWER Determining unresponsiveness:
- warning signs prior to a cardiopulmonary arrest (changes in VS)
Determining responsiveness
- patient doesn't respond to tapping or shaking of the shoulders
Calling a code - ANSWER When patient is found unresponsive:
- Immediately pick up the phone in the room and dial "20"
- Infrorm the operator that you have a code blue and identify the room number or code blue PAL for
pediatric
- Call for help from other staff to bring your crash cart
- Start CPR
Basic life support (BLS) - ANSWER - Changes the priority to C - A - B
- Check responsiveness and presence/absence of normal breathing or gasping
- Call for help
Circulation:
- Assess for the presence of pulse by checking the carotid pulse at least 5 sec but no more than 10 sec
- If no pulse, begin CPR (30 compression: 2 breathe ratio; 100 compressions/min)
Airway:
- Is the airway open? is he breathing?
- If the patient has known cervical trauma use the jaw thrust method
