Chapter 1 & Lecture 1
The Diagnostic Process
1. Theory development of the problems/complaints and problematic behavior
2. Operationalization and measurement
3. Application of diagnostic methods
è Thought to action process
diagnostic process is described as an inductive-deductive process that is centered around five basic
questions. It begins with the client’s problem and ends with a recommendation or proposed solution.
The process is modeled on the empirical cycle for answering research questions. This means that this
is a regulated process that must comply with criteria in order to answer such a type of question.
Application = Clarification of relation btw diagnostician and referrer, Distinction btw referrer in name
(= requires an examination to be carried out) and actual referrer (= takes the initiative), Psychiatrist
has power to decide, person responsible for the intake only acts as an advisor
Exploration = Analysis of client’s request for help and referrer’s request ßneed not to be the same
requests, Content of referrers request depends on setting: very specific request in ambulant services,
most requests contain three basis questions: recognition, explanation, indication
Analysis results in three questions:
1. Is it an obsessive-compulsive disorder?
