America: A Narrative History Chapter 13

Manifest destiny - ANSManifest Destiny is a term for the attitude prevalent during the 19th
century period of American expansion that the United States not only could, but was destined
to, stretch from coast to coast. This attitude helped fuel western settlement, Native American
removal and war with Mexico.

Overland Trails - ANSa stagecoach and wagon trail in the American West during the 19th
century. While portions of the route had been used by explorers and trappers since the 1820s,
the Overland Trail was most heavily used in the 1860s as an alternative route to the Oregon,
California, and Mormon trails through central Wyoming. The Overland Trail was famously used
by the Overland Stage Company owned by Ben Holladay to run mail and passengers to Salt
Lake City, Utah, via stagecoaches in the early 1860s.

Apache - ANS

Nez Perce - ANSThe Nez Perce are an Indigenous people of the Plateau who have lived on the
Columbia River Plateau in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States for at least 11,500
years

Mountain Men - ANSA mountain man is a male trapper and explorer who lives in the wilderness.
Mountain men were most common in the North American Rocky Mountains from about 1810
through to the 1880s (with a peak population in the early 1840s). They were instrumental in
opening up the various Emigrant Trails (widened into wagon roads) allowing Americans in the
east to settle the new territories of the far west by organized wagon trains traveling over roads
explored and in many cases, physically improved by the mountain men and the big fur
companies originally to serve the mule train based inland fur trade.

Oregon Fever - ANS

Presidios, Friars - ANSThe Spanish discovered San Francisco Bay and constructed presidios
(military garrisons) at San Diego and Monterey. Even more important, Franciscan friars, led by
Junípero Serra, established a Catholic mission at San Diego.

Californios - ANSHispanic Californians, called Californios, took comfort that Mexico City, the
capital, was too far away to exercise effective control over them. Between 1821, when Mexico
gained its independence, and 1841, Spanish-speaking Californians, as well as many recent
American arrivals, staged ten revolts against Mexican governors

John Frémont - ANSohn Charles Frémont or Fremont was an American explorer, politician, and
soldier who, in 1856, became the first candidate of the anti-slavery Republican Party for the
office of President of the United States.
