PDD Study Exam Chapter 41 Questions & Answers 2024/2025 Methods of Structural Steel Design (in US) - ANSWERSThere are two methods of structural steel design in the US: 1. the allowable stress design (ASD) 2. the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) Either method is allowed by the IBC, but the IBC is based on the ASD method. Advantages of Structural Steel - ANSWERSAdvantages of structural steel include: - high strength - uniformity of manufacture - ductility (property that allows steel to withstand excessive deformations, due to high tensile stresses, without failure, making it useful for earthquake-resistant structures) it can absorb energy in the inelastic range without failure - variety of shapes and sizes (allowing most efficient member to be used) - ease and speed of construction (as members are cut and prepared in the factory) - high strength-to-weight ratio (reducing building dead load and space needed for structural elements) - highest modulus of elasticity of any material at 29,000,000 psi (meaning it is very stiff and resistant to bending/deformation) - unlike concrete, the properties of steel members is highly predictable, and need not be over-designed) Disadvantages of Structural Steel - ANSWERSDisadvantages of Structural Steel include: - reduction in strength when subjected to fire - it deforms at high temperature (and must be protected with fire-resistant materials)
