Patho Exam 3-Maryville University Inquiries and responses with detailed explanations 2024/2025
Erythrocytes - An RBC is a small disk with two unique properties: 1). a biconcave shape and 2). the capacity to be reversibly deformed. The flattened, biconcave shape provides a surface area/volume ratio that is optimal for gas diffusion into and out of the cell. Deformity enables the erythrocyte to assume a more compact torpedo-like shape, squeeze through the microcirculation, and return to normal. Hemoglobin Synthesis - very dependent on nutritional intake. Two of the most important nutrients are Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and Iron. Iron Cycle - Iron (Fe) is also recycled made possible by the plasma carrier, transferrin. Tissue macrophages (primarily in the spleen) break down ingested erythrocytes and return iron to the bloodstream directly or after storing it as a ferritin or hemosiderin.
