Anorexia Nervosa (AN)
Diagnostic Criteria:
1. Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements, leading to a
significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex,
developmental trajectory, and physical health.
2. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though
underweight.
3. Disturbance in the way one's body weight or shape is
experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-
evaluation, or persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of the
current low body weight.
Hallmark Features:
• Severe restriction of food intake.
• Underweight status, often significantly below normal body weight.
• Distorted body image and a profound fear of gaining weight.
• Amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) in females is common,
although this is no longer a diagnostic criterion in DSM-5.
• Obsessive behaviors related to food, exercise, and body shape.
Bulimia Nervosa (BN)
Diagnostic Criteria:
1. Recurrent episodes of binge eating. An episode of binge eating is
characterized by both of the following:
o Eating, in a discrete period (e.g., within any 2-hour period), an
amount of food that is definitely larger than what most people
would eat in a similar period under similar circumstances.
