Assessment 6 is a written assessment and contributes 25% to your promotion mark. This
assessment measures achievement of the outcomes of Learning Units 3 and 4.
1.1 Outcomes of Assessment 6
This assessment requires you to demonstrate that you have met the following outcomes
and assessment criteria:
Learning outcome 3
Use children’s literature to develop emergent literacy skills and early mathematical concepts.
Assessment criteria:
In this assessment, you should be able to demonstrate that you are able to do the following:
• Define emergent literacy and have a clear understanding of how literacy develops from
birth.
• Understand how to create literacy-rich environments that will facilitate the development
of emergent literacy skills.
• Demonstrate how children’s literature can be used to facilitate the development of
emergent literacy skills.
• Discuss the early mathematical concepts that should be developed.
• Demonstrate how children’s literature can be used to develop early mathematical
concepts.
Learning outcome 4
Use children’s literature to further language and cognitive development and to support
successful learning.
Assessment criteria:
In this assessment, you should be able to demonstrate that you are able to do the following:
• Explain how children’s literature can be used to develop critical thinking.
• Use different technologies to promote cognitive development.
• Demonstrate how children’s literature can be used as an introduction to lessons in
other subjects.
