GCSE AQA English language paper 2 question 5 (40 marks).

24 marks for content and 16 marks for technical accuracy

The question is:

Nurses deserve much better pay and working conditions in recognition of the vital work they do
in saving lives day after day. Write a letter to your local MP in which you explain your views on
this statement.

Dear Mr Blue,

It is unjust. It is unfair. It is unacceptable. It saddens me to the very depths of my heart that I
have to write to you regarding the treatment nurses receive. Nurses provide a pillar of hope and
are an integral part of our community. Without them we would be left isolated, harmed and
neglected. They are the light at the end of the dark tunnel. They are what keeps our nation
together. They are the heart and soul of our lives. What do they get for endless hours of blood,
sweat and tears? What do they get in return? What reward do they get? Nothing but
underappreciation. You are our local MP. You need to resolve this, and you need to do it now.

I believe that the conditions nurses work in and the pay they earn for it is a moral crisis. It is a
pressing and deeply troubling issue that has plagued our society for far too long. Moreover, it is a
stark reminder that even in our prosperous world there are countless nurses who are suffering
from the ill treatment they receive. We are robbing nurses their right to a life filled with joy and
hope; the treatment they receive after tirelessly working to save our lives robs the principles of
compassion, solidarity and social justice – the principles that our nation is built on. It all starts
with awareness and I write to you proudly on behalf of all the heroes and heroines who keep our
community together. If not us then who? If not now then when? We need to take action Mr Blue
and the power ultimately lies in your hands.

If you don’t believe when I confidently say that nurses are what keeps our nation’s heart beating
then let me tell you a very personal story of mine. Last month, my grandfather had a heart
attack, he collapsed onto the floor and every nanometre of happiness left his face. We are very
close. Very close. He is the person who can instantly place a smile on my face – his smile
radiates joy. When he collapsed, he was taken to hospital, there was a very slim chance of
survival. With the matter being out of my hands all I could do was cry – I cried buckets that day.
However, one nurse came up to me and said “Don’t worry, your grandfather is in very competent
and able hands – he will be alright.” It turns out every word she said was true. The nurses worked
a miracle and in a matter of a week, my grandfather was getting back to his usual self. Crystal
clearly, I can say that every person living in our community has a story like mine. They are our
heroes. Why can’t we help them for once?

Without a shadow of a doubt, I believe we need to increase the pay for nurses. Not only do we
need to increase the pay, we need to improve the conditions they work in. We need to
understand that this is not a new issue, it has been entwined into the fabrics of our society. It is
our duty to come up with initiatives and ideas that will uplift these vulnerable members of our
nation. Mr blue, correct me if I am wrong but isn’t the UK one of the most developed countries in
the world? It is supposed to have the most developed economy in the world, the most
developed infrastructure, the most developed education system, the most developed AI sector,
the most diverse population in the world. Yet we still can not provide a substantial pay and
beneficial working conditions to nurses. It disgusts me. MR Blue think about this, put yourself in
