Weapons of the Blitz ( bomb types, V1s, V2s):
Describe two features of:
The types of Bombs used in the Blitz from 1940-41: One bomb which was used during this period is
the incendiaries/ They were dropped mainly by the first wave of bombers and started mass fires
which could even lead to buildings been burnt if not dealt with. There were also Mines which were
dropped by parachutes so attacks were silent and couldn’t be detected easily and were the most
powerful bomb
Describe 2 features of V1 Attacks: It caused an extensive number of deaths as civilians couldn’t get
in shelters as it didn’t trigger the Air Raid Siren given it flew very low, meaning civilians had no clue as
to when an attack was occurring. Also, it hit London during the daytime and caused extensive
damage to buildings given that the main cause of casualties was from flying glass due to explosions.
Describe 2 features of V2 Attacks: V2 attacks were so fast that they exploded before civilians even
heard them, causing an extensive number of deaths as seen through the Deptford attack in 1944
where a V2 hit a store called Wools worth and killed 200. Another feature of the V2 attacks were that
they were the first ballistic missiles and that attacks only stopped until the launch sites were
captured by the Allies in Europe.

How did bombing targets change over periods of the Blitz: From the 25 August to 19 th September
1940, bombing was targeted mainly on military bases and energy supplies as well as any
communication centres. However, from the 20th September 1940 to the 10th May 1941, the intention
of bombing was to lower civilian morale by attacking homes and national treasures.
Give 2 Features of the Bethnal Green Disaster in 1943: One feature of the Bethnal Green Disaster
was that it occurred as a result of a heavy Allied raid. During this period, the Blitz was going through
the “Lull” period where raids were irregular and mainly after an Allied raid on the Germans. Another
feature of the Bethnal Green Disaster was that it killed 173 people due to the 1500 who pushed and
shoved their way Bethnal Green Tube shelter, causing civilians to fall and be trampled upon in a race
for survival.
Why was London Bombed?
London was bombed because it was a major port and transport hub for the British empire and by
destroying it, the war effort for Britain would collapse and no longer be a problem for the Germans.
Another reason why London was bombed was because it was home to 8.8 million civilians and the
royal family and any pain inflicted on the royal family in particular which end Britain’s participation in
