Leather strap / Act One Scene I would use a “cat o’ nine
whip / flail One: The tails”, traditionally used for
Voyage Out
(for flogging) military floggings. It has a
wooden handle, around 30cm
long, wrapped in dark brown
leather. Attached to the
handle are nine 1m lengths of
thin rope, with knots tied at
10cm intervals along each, to
cause maximum possible damage
to the back of the person
being flogged.
Gun Act One Scene I would use a Georgian era rifle,
(rifle for Three: which was a minimum of 16
shooting birds) Punishment inches and a maximum of 26
inches, made from metal and
English walnut wood. The handle
would be pressed into the bicep
of the dominant arm with the
hand resting on the trigger. Some
had engravings on the handle –
this would be an effective way to
signify wealth and prestige.
Writing desk Act One Scene I would use a classic 18th century
and chair Four: The oak writing desk with a sloped
(Ralph’s) Loneliness of top and a lockable drawer which
Men was used to keep stationary,
paperwork and pictures inside
(eg Ralph’s wife). The chair would
also be oak with four legs and a
wooden back.
Journal Act One Scene A black/tan leather covered
(Ralph’s) Four: The journal with a leather tie for
Loneliness of privacy. The pages inside would
Men be in worn condition and a tea
stain colour.
