PREFACE
This book focuses on the management of business organisations in the South African business
environment. It describes how managers should manage resources and activities to enable
organisations to operate as profitably as possible, thereby increasing the wealth of society and
the country in general.
This tenth edition of Introduction to Business Management marks a milestone in
introductory business management texts in South Africa as it is one of the few introductory
business management texts that have shown consistent growth over an extended period. The
first edition was published in 1984 and now, 32 years later, the tenth edition has been
published! Since the publication of the first edition, nearly half a million students at many
universities and other institutions have used Introduction to Business Management as the
foundation on which to build their careers in the business world.
Organisation of the text
Part 1 of the book introduces the reader to the world of business management. It describes the
role of the entrepreneur and manager in the business world, the business organisation as the
subject of study and the South African business environment. It also focuses on the growing
importance of corporate social responsibility for South African businesses.
Part 2 contains an exposition of the management process and a survey of general
management principles on which the functional management areas discussed in Part 3 are
based. Part 3 deals with operations management, human resource management, marketing
management, financial management, and purchasing and supply management.
Changes from previous editions
The tenth edition follows the same value-chain approach that was used in the previous edition.
Supply chains and value chains are complementary and focus on the flow of products and
services in one direction and the value that is generated in the eyes of the customer flowing
back. Creating a profitable value chain requires a careful alignment between what the
customer wants (through the demand or value chain) and what is delivered via the supply
chain.
In this edition, the authors have endeavoured to retain all the elements that have contributed
to the success of the book. Comments by students and academics were extremely useful and
were incorporated, where possible, in the new layout and contents.
The tenth edition of Introduction to Business Management offers many improvements in
style, content and presentation to make the text even more effective and enjoyable. This
edition includes substantial new and improved material. Each chapter commences with a case
study that places the core elements in a practical perspective and integrates theory and
practice. A small business perspective has also been added to each chapter.
Chapters also include challenges in the form of short case studies that require students to
think critically about the concepts and their application. Key terms, multiple-choice questions
and questions for discussion are included in each chapter to help students in their preparation
for assignments and the examination.
