Identify one-two Watson Carative Processes utilized with this patient; describe how each applied in
this situation and how each affected your practitioner-patient relationship.
My focus surrounded a patient experiencing extreme depression and suicidal ideation.
Naturally I decided to focus on Jean Watsons Carative Factor “The instillation of faith-hope”. It
was important that when working with my patient I would project a non-judgmental and
supportive attitude while instilling hope into him. Any patient with suicidal ideation needs to
be instilled with hope. While I was a healthcare provider for him, I spent a lot of time forming a
trusting relationship that would help me to dive deeper and learn more. He would open up to
me with still great hesitancy, but it was a start. I did not want to come off as judgmental, but I
needed to know his past and where he was mentally. I felt that I could reach him in a through
therapeutic communication, where I could show that I truly wanted to help him. He
appreciated that I was doing my job, and let me do my assessments. We sat and talked
together as I gathered my data. We talked about the future, what was going on in the world.
We talked of little things that we looked forward to each day. One of my interventions was goal
setting. I believe that I gave him the time and a listening ear, without making him felt rushed or
uncomfortable. This also help contribute to instilling hope for the future. While he had a history
of PTSD and depression, he did feel comfortable giving me the details. I do believe that he
believes that I have hope in him and that it makes a difference in his life. I believe that I did
instill hope in him this week.
Journal entry (Feelings about day, use of Watson’s Carative Processes for self, something new learned,
something to incorporate into my practice).
I can easily say that I was extremely nervous jumping onto hyperspace for the first time. It really
slowed me down. I didn’t feel that I could completely care for my patient as I could not yet get
into the medication room. I am still not sure why we do not have access. Other than my computer
difficulties I managed all four of my patients rather well. Next week I am to try and
comprehensively handle just one patient and do everything now that I am more comfortable
charting. I felt very comfortable with my nurse and my clinical instructor. I adapted quickly to the
new environment and know I can be much more successful in my time management next week. It
was very educational watching my nurse collaborate with physicians. I hope I can effectively
manage my time as she did and work well with other healthcare provides. Watching ostomy care
was really great as well. The wound care nurse was eager to share and he made it look so simple!
