,INTRODUCTION
This research project is a qualitative study, which includes interviews of three
individuals, who currently do volunteer work. The crux of this study is to gather
data and research about the question of what motivates people to do volunteer
work. These participants were not compelled to do this work, but do it purely out
of their own choice.
All the participants complied with characteristics of a volunteer as well as
volunteerism. These fundamental aspects contributed to the soundness of all the
interviews that was conducted.

Participant A
A.1 Brief description of participant
Miss SS is a 31 year old, vibrant red head who lives in the south side of
Johannesburg. She grew up in this rocky town and has been living there ever
since. She is still fortunate to have both her parents in her life, and is the second
youngest of four children. Both her older siblings live abroad. She currently has a
degree in Bachelors of Education and would like to start a new degree in Applied
Psychology in the near future. This curly locked lady is engaged and soon to be
married in the New Year. Her hazel eyes speak the language of kindness and
openness towards her teaching career, where she educates children in their
foundation years. She lives an active life, by dancing and playing netball and has
been doing this since she was only 7 years old. She is also actively involved in
her church community, as she is a Sunday school teacher. Her parents are also
involved with the church as her father was a former pastor and her mother is
also a Sunday school coordinator. Working with children has always been her
passion and finds her interaction with children and young people as a blessing,
as she strives to molds and shapes them into the best people they can be.

, A.2 Transcribed interview
Interviewer: For how long have you been doing volunteer work?
Interviewee: I have been volunteering for this orphanage for
four years now, since 2015.
Interviewer: Why do you keep on doing volunteer work?
Interviewee: The main reason why I continue doing this is because the
reward is so great. From the moment the children enter the
room, till the end of the session, the improvement that can be
seen is incredible. Their Coordination, rhythm and flexibility
improves almost instantly, but what is the most rewarding, is
that each individual has the opportunity to tell their story
through dancing. Through various sessions, one can see the
self-confidence, dignity, pride and sense of responsibility
which they develop, and that is the greatest reward a dancing
teacher can receive from orphans.
Interviewer: Is this the only organization you contribute your time and
talents too?
Interviewee: At the moment, with the occupation that I am currently in, I
am very restricted. I don’t only teach at a school, but I also
do coaching in netball for my school after hours, so the
limited time I have, I can only give to one organization in my
part time. I would like to contribute more of my time in the
future though. (Miss SS sighs)
Interviewer: Yeah, that can seem overwhelming at times. What motivates
you to do volunteer work?
Interviewee: Since I was a little girl, I always wanted to help others. The
feeling of making someone else happy makes me in return
happy. (Miss SS, smiles). There is no greater gift than giving,
and as I am privileged to make a difference in someone else’s
life through dancing, why not do these by motivating others in
the same way by putting one foot in front of the other?
