Inguinal canal
The inguinal canal is a passage in the lower abdomen that allows structures like the spermatic cord in males or the round ligament of the uterus in females to travel between the abdomen and the genitals. It extends obliquely from the deep inguinal ring to the superficial inguinal ring, formed by layers of abdominal wall muscles. In males, it carries the spermatic cord containing the vas deferens, blood vessels, and nerves, while in females, it contains the round ligament. The canal is clinically significant for hernias, as weaknesses in its walls can lead to protrusions of abdominal contents into the groin area.
