, Introduction

The companies I chose are the not for profit organization Doctors without Borders
(DWB) and a company that is focused on making profit namely Unilever. For the two
chosen companies I will describe both companies’ supply chain.

Definition of a supply chain

The definition of supply chain in short is how the raw materials get to the end user of the
product eventually. The raw materials have to be produced to a product the consumers
can buy and use. A supply chain is a system of organizations, people, activities,
information, and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to
customer. Supply chain activities include the transformation of raw materials into a
finished product that is delivered to the end customer. In some supply chain systems,
used products may re-enter the supply chain at any point where they are recyclable.

Main components and variations within different organizations

There are more components than there are variations in general. Both organizations
have to get their raw materials and produce them to the end product that is useable for
the consumers. Both organizations have instructions of how they should produce and
they should produce the products. They both have their regular suppliers and these
suppliers have their own suppliers too. This is how the raw materials get to the factories
which produce a part or the whole product, after this it has to another factory if it is
needed; otherwise the finished product goes to the supplier immediately. These
suppliers sell the products to other suppliers or to the organizations directly. This is how
the organizations get their products.

There is not a lot that varies between the two organizations within the supply chain; they
both have their regular suppliers, and have the same process of making a raw product
into a finished product.

Unilever is focusing on products to sell in the grocery store like soup, deodorant, food,
etc. The suppliers of Unilever have to make sure they order the right products from their
suppliers. The raw materials have got to be produced into a final product Unilever is
selling. Unilever has their own rules and habits with the supplier and how they want the
product being made by the factories.

With Doctors without Borders this process is a little bit more complicated because we
are talking about drugs and other health products. The products need to be produced
