Assignment 05:
Fact 1: One out of every five South Africans lives below
the food poverty line (Source: http://beta2.statssa.gov.za/?p=2591 Accessed 2015)

Fact 2: Nicky Oppenheimer's nett worth is about ZAR 90
Billion (https://www.forbes.com/profile/nicky-oppenheimer/?list=africa-billionaires Accessed
2017)

Is this ok?
The Crossroads question which you get to examine in this assignment (together with a little bit of
extra information) is:

"One out of every five South Africans lives below the food poverty line."

My personal opinion on this statement is most closely described by:

a. Who cares?
b. If the population growth rates of the poor were not so high they wouldn't be so
poor.
c. If they worked harder, they wouldn't be so poor.
d. This is sad, but to be honest it is not going to stop me focusing on my own
wellbeing first.
e. I think that individually we can and should strive to eliminate poverty.

Do you remember what option you chose?

To this question we add the fact that Nicky Oppenheimer (the richest South African according to
Forbes) has a net worth of about ZAR 90 billion. To put this into some perspective, if Mr
Oppenheimer were to liquidate his assets and put this money into a fixed deposit bank account
at 8% interest, he would earn over ZAR 7 billion per year. This is more than 10 times what
Whitey Basson took home in 2010, and about 1.6 million times the approximately ZAR 4500 per
year that a person on the food poverty line would earn.
