Titel: A New History of the Humanities

Ondertitel: The search for Principles and Patters from Antiquity to the present

 Uitgebreide vertaling van De Vergeten wetenschappen (2010)
 Ander boek: Beyond grammar: an experience-based theory of language (1998)

geesteswetenschappen

Introduction: The quest for Principles and Patters

 Humanities = geesteswetenschappen?  andere worden, niet dezelfde betekenis in beide
talen.
 Humanities since the 19th century… the disciplines that investigate the expressions of the
human mind (p.1 – Dilthey)

antiquiteit)

, Bods belangstelling: the research function = the empirical dimension of the humanities
o 4 belangrijke punten over the different forms of the humanities
 Memory function = keeping alive the works from the past and present, often
through collections.
 Educational function = by teaching these works to new generations
 Critical function = by interpreting these works for public at large
 Research function = by asking questions and posing hypotheses regarding
humanistic artefacts.
o Empirie? Empeira = ervaring
o Leezenberg = zintuigelijke ervaring
geesteswetenschappen is gedaan.
 The humanities have become increasingly fragmented
o There is no central humanistic discipline… there are common humanistic practices and
methodologies
 Humanistic practices = in nederlands humanistiek betekend iets anders, hier
betekent het geesteswetenschappelijke praktijken
 Verstehen vs. Erklaren
empirische basis informatie vinden omdat grote lijn = continuiteit
o Gaat tegen wat Dilthey zei: prescriptive back to descriptive again at the end of the early
modern period.
o Daartegenover: humanities is a continuous tradtion
 Classical division
o Antiquity (Ancient Greece + Roman times)
o Middle ages (500 tot 1500)
o Early modern era
 Begint met Descartes (1596-1650) with “cogito ergo sum”, Descartes gaat weg
minder grote rol speelt
 1500 tot 1789
 Renaissance
veronderstelde breuklijn zit.
 The study of all media and culture: from film studies to new media
o Film + TV: from structural to cultural patterns
 Structuralisme?
 Semiology: syntagma-paradigma
 Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913)
o The rise of media studies

,  Benjamin + McLuhan
o Cultural studies: eclecticism
 Cultural studies (CS) niet specifiek geestesetenschappelijk
 Wel behorend tot the humanities?
 CS lacks a clear basis that guarantees any controllability
 New Media: rhizomatic
o ‘new forms of encyclopedias’
o Stemmatic philology?
 Hybridity: new humanistic disciplines
o Hybridity of methods … in all beginning disciplines
 Wat we nodig hebben: detachment
o Waarschuwing: interdisciplinary mules

Conclusie BOD: Is there a break in the modern humanities?

 Breuk
o Alleen in de modern geesteswetenschappen?
 Toch progress in the modern humanities?
o Plaats postmodern?
 Anders dan “deconstructivistisch’ en ‘poststructuralistisch’
 Bods these: vooruitgang in cyclische tendens
o From descriptive to perscriptive and back to descriptive (p.6)
break
o Maar niet in de nieuwe disciplines: film, cultural studies, new media
o Want geen early modern counterpart
o Cumulative progress in termen van problem-solving capacity + greater refinement + new
techniques
 Dichotomy in the post-war humanities ?
o Stylistic and computational analysis… is a long way from the poststructuralist and
deconstructivist approach (351)
