ASSIGNMENT NO1
, 2024
, a) Describe how you would define ‘Africanise/Decolonise the curriculum”
using a South African perspective by providing practical examples. Be
as holistic as possible. Write a paragraph of about 10 lines.
Africanising/Decolonising the curriculum in a South African context means
incorporating and centring African knowledge, perspectives, experiences, and voices
within the education system. This includes critically examining and challenging
Eurocentric and colonial biases in the curriculum, while drawing on indigenous African
knowledge systems and histories. Practical examples of this may include incorporating
African literature, philosophies, and languages into the curriculum, integrating African
history and perspectives into various subjects such as history, geography, and
science, and ensuring that African narratives and experiences are represented in
educational materials and resources. It also involves promoting critical thinking and
dialogue around issues of power, privilege, and discrimination within the context of
South Africa's complex colonial and apartheid history. Ultimately,
Africanising/Decolonising the curriculum serves to empower students to learn about
and critically engage with their own cultural heritage and identity, while fostering a
more inclusive and equitable education system.
