In what state does the novel take place? - Alabama (Maycomb). What does the children's father, Atticus Finch, do for a living? - He's a lawyer. From whose point of view is the story told? - Jean Louise "Scout" Finch. Who is Calpurnia and what is she like? - She is the maid of the household and she acts like a mother to the children because their mother passed away when they were younger. What game does Dill invent? - Dill invents the Boo Radley game. This game is trying to get Arthur Radley to leave his home. What did Arthur (Boo) Radley do (at age 33) that landed him temporarily in the county jail? - He stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors. According to Jem's description, what does Boo look like? - Boo is a 6 foot tall monster that eats squirrels raw and any cat he could catch, thats why his hands were always blood stained. What act of "courage" on Jem's part ends the chapter? - He touched the Radley house. On her first day of school, what does Scout get in trouble for? List three things. - 1. She stands up for Walter Cunningham when he won't accept the money. 2. She already knows how to read and write. 3. She beats up Walter for getting her in trouble the first time. How does Miss Caroline Fisher feel at the end of her first day? How do you know? - She probably felt like she had failed. Her class was so hectic and she could not keep control. She even had to deal with Burris Ewell. What are the Cunninghams like? - The Cunninghams are a poor but proud family in Maycomb, unwilling to accept charity or loans that they are unable to pay back. How does Scout solve her problem with Walter Cunningham? - She beats him up and rubs his nose in the dirt. How does Jem solve Scout's problem with Walter Cunningham? - He invites Walter to have dinner with them. Why can't Walter pass the first grade? - He misses too much school because he has to help his father with the farm. What scared and shocked Miss Caroline? - The bug that crawled out of Burris Ewell's hair frightened Miss Caroline because she hates bugs. What is the first gift that appears in the hollow tree? What other gifts do the children find? - The first thing found in the hollow tree is gum. Other things they find are: two indian head pennies, a ball of twine, two soap sculptures that resemble Jem and Scout, a medal, a pocket watch, and a pocket knife. What new facts does Dill offer about his father? - Dill does not have a pleasant home life. His mother seems to ignore him, especially when she remarries. His father is out of the picture. How has the Boo Radley game changed? - The game has become more direct in getting Boo's personal attention. The next day, Jem and Dill hatch a plan to leave a note for Boo in the Radley's window, using a fishing line. The note will ask him to come out sometimes and tell them what he's doing inside, and that they won't hurt him and will buy him ice cream. When Scout rolls into to Radley front yard in the tire, what does she hear? - She heard laughter coming from the Radley house. What does Scout admire about Miss Maudie? - She is empathetic and progressive like Scout's father. She is intelligent and doesn't follow the same old racial divisions of Maycomb. What do you learn about Uncle Jack? - Miss Maudie had known Uncle Jack Finch, Atticus's brother, since they were children. Nearly the same age, they had grown up together at Finch's Landing. Miss Maudie was the daughter of a neighboring landowner, Dr. Frank Buford. Dr. Buford's profession was medicine and his obsession was anything that grew in the ground, so he stayed poor. Uncle Jack Finch confined his passion for digging to his window boxes in Nashville and stayed rich. What new plan do the boys devise to get Boo too come out? Why doesn't it work? - Instead, Jem decided he would try using a fishing pole. The children had seen a loose shutter on the Radley house, and Jem figured he would be able to attach a note to the end of the fishing pole and stick it through the shutter. But before Jem could get the note inside, Atticus caught them in the act. He told them in no uncertain terms to "stop tormenting that man." What does Dill say that causes Scout to accuse him of lying? - "Well how'd you feel if you'd been shut up for a hundred years with nothin' but cats to eat? I bet he's got a beard down to here-" "Like your daddy's?"
