Iron tablets are also called Ferrous Sulphate tablets. They contain FeSO4 which is formed when iron
filings are mixed in copper sulphate solution.
About70% of iron in the body is found in haemoglobin, which is important in supplying cells with
oxygen.
Iron is also found in essential proteins, for example in a blood protein called ferritin, and is important for
a fully functioning immune system.
Iron deficiency anaemia causes symptoms such as tiredness, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and
pale skin
This may be caused by a lack of iron in one’s diet, heavy periods, pregnancy or bleeding in the stomach.
If iron deficiency anaemia is not treated, the patient would be more at risk of illness.
Other people who may need to take iron tablets include people with blood disorders such as sickle cell
anaemia, people with heart failure, those who take iron-depleting medication such as those used to
reduce stomach acid, and vegans.
The approximate mass of iron in a standard tablet is 65mg (361% the daily value)
The NHS recommends a daily intake of 8.7mg of iron daily for men over 18, 14.8mg a day for women
aged 19-50 and 8.7mg a day for women over 50.
Titration method
1. Prepare a 250.0 cm3 solution of FeSO4·7H2O solution in a volumetric flask.
2. Use a pipette to measure 25 cm3 of the solution into a conical flask.
3. Add 10 cm3 of 1 mol dm-3 H2SO4(aq) (an excess)
4. Use a burette to titrate this solution using a standard 0.0200 moldm-3 solution of potassium
manganate (VII), KMnO4(aq)
5. Analyse the results to determine percentage purity.
